Mattie’s Priorities

SD62 has formal relationships, through Memorandum of Understandings, with every municipality its schools are found, except for Metchosin District. When Districts partner, they reduce their overhead and get access to more provincial and federal funding.

Formal MoUs allow staff to work side by side, without an MoU business often reverts all the way up to Board to Board conversations and far away from those trying to collaborate on a specific task.

Mattie will pursue a modern MoU between Metchosin District & School District 62

A catchment area is the geographic zone around a school that determines which students are eligible to attend that school based on their home address.

A Catchment Review allows a school district a better glimpse at where students live, where schools are, and how the capacity is used. The years ahead offer a chance to review the catchment of today with the needs of tomorrow in mind.

Mattie will prioritise neighbourhood school access and the unification of families & space for reasonable accomodations.

SD62 is one of the largest people-movers and destinations for land-based transportation, yet students often trek past bus stops because of disconnects in pricing and service. Too often, West Shore students travelling for extracurriculars requires by default their parents driving them, adding to congestion.

Through collaboration, SD62 can be a voice at the table as the CRD navigates its goal to have the province implement a phased expansion of the fare-free youth transit program, as well as collaboration with local post-secondary communities.

Mattie will advance Transit solutions, including Youth Pass expansion.

SD62 calendars set the tone for students, families, staff, local entrepreneurs, and more; predictable returns to classes, communicated broadly, can help reduce stress across households, and set up the Western Communities for success.

Mattie will prioritise policies which prioritise predictable scheduling for students, staff, families, and those who depend on them.
